This is John White, of Estacada, Oregon falling on a big old-growth fir on a strip not far from his home.
John is cutting a jack seat above. He will be using a Silvey tree jack to direct where this big tree falls. He wants to carefully place this tree in a good lay- avoiding stumps or anything else that could damage its valuable logs.
The seat is cut and two Silvey jack rams are in place. They are connected via hoses to a pump unit that is sitting behind the Stihl 090, not in view. The Stihl 090 (saw with a red top) is fitted with an 84" Cannon bar and Oregon #59CJ saw chain John purchased from Madsen's.
Above, John starts the undercut.
Here John is starting the second cut in his undercut with his Stihl 088.
With a big tree like this -- and no place to stand on the front side -- a big saw with a long bar is the right tool to finish his undercut.
The jack's pump is now in plain view. With some pressure on the rams, John is setting some wedges to back-up the rams.
Here's a view of the tree with the undercut and tree jacks in place.
Logs don't get any nicer that this.
This is John and his big 090 Stihl, ready for the next big tree..
"John, thanks for sharing these pictures with us. This is an impressive job" The Madsen's crew.
